Nothing has to be elucidated about the impairment man has granted to the natural resources, especially energy molecules. Studies say that the fuel sources are fast depleting, that petroleum products might sound nothing more than a myth to the next generation. Thrust for more never ends and now, the scientists are at the cross roads, taking diversion to renewable sources of energy. The term is no longer unaccustomed, since the world craves for the use of greener energy sources. Hydrogen is being anticipated as the future’s energy carrier as the nations begin to realize its potential. A multitude of research and studies are being pursued for developing efficient machineries for its application. Fuel cells are one such facet that can have elevated levels of reliability and efficiency. Fuel cell-driven cars, buses and motorbikes are soon to conquer our roads.Nuclear energy, though still condemned by many, is calculated as an alternative to present day energy crisis. In this context, India too has adopted several programmes for enriching the wealth of Uranium and Thorium, the priceless raw materials to future’s energy source. India vigorously persuades in discovering, processing and marketing those sources in future. India’s competence in this technology is pioneering, providing expertise at an extra ordinary level, despite all the protests against it.

To make room for more, it was essentially a radical step to reduce the entire technology to nano dimensions. Imagine of a world where one can carry an entire laboratory in one’s palm and perform one’s own blood tests with those miniature apparatus!! A world where diagnosis of a malignancy call for a mere gulp of a tablet!!  Sounds like a fairy tale??? NO!! This is what technology has kept in store for future. Nanotechnology promises us a life made so easy with those miniature magical bullets branded as bio-sensors. Sensors find a place in almost all facets of life, let alone, health.
Integrated multifunctional sensors in automobiles take care of the health and habits of the vehicles. Applications of these sensors are vast ranging from detection of a bomb in a crowd to a potential mine of gold.
Medicine is where the technology now focuses by and large, with most dreaded diseases in the lime light. One such sensor, say, Micro Electro Chemical Cell Platform is projected to sense glycated hemoglobin, as seen in diabetics, and to modulate treatment. Drug delivery system is the most awaited improvisation by doctors. They dream of tiny “smart- bombs” and “nano bullets” that can travel throughout the body in search of tumors and specifically blast off just the tumor cells.

Old age is inevitable, though least preferred by most of us. Is raising a bank balance all what needed to store for your retired life?? Does man live on bread and medicines alone??Our youth keep us so pre-occupied that we hardly plan for our retired life. Loneliness and a sense of being “left-out” engross our thoughts, longing for a life so enjoyable. Indeed, we need to plan for our retired life, lest, we will simply find ourselves metaphorised with the lazy cricket of Eosope’s fable. What we ought to do is rather simple. Let our children live their lives and go for investing time with friends of same age- they appreciate us better. Surround ourselves with people of similar thoughts and plan for an active old age- not a lethargic one. It seems better to dissolve in the concrete jungle and move to apartments than being secluded in self-designed bungalows. It is said that lack of exercise in youth shove our body to a state of “can’t exercise” mode, a root cause of majority of old age ailments.
Need to keep up with the trend is not be reiterated since it is the need of the time. Retirement doesn’t mean shutting down the brains and waiting for the ultimate end. Habit of reading can definitely help us out the solitude.

Elegance communioned with tranquility- the attribute that makes a contemporary- styled homes the most appealing style of the time. Neither dazzling bright colours nor scary superfluities welcome you; rather you are greeted by an unruffled grace of neutral colours and add-ons adorning nobility. There is an air of composure around that heave you into a state of yearning for such a home. Contemporary style of interior designing encompasses the restricted usage of colours, the most preferred being white, grey and black. The decorations and furniture are ought to be of geometrical shapes, with no room for curls and twists. It speaks of nobility being asserted through simplicity. What makes it more adorable is the space this style provides us along with the luxury of light and fresh air donated by the wall-long doors and windows. No stinginess is to be seen in use of glass for walls which further adds up to the openness endowing us with a feel of being nature friendly. A single thought of dining, eyeing the beauty of the well-maintained garden arouses the apetite. Tumult created by cramming in all possible stuff is what spoils the mood and should be taken care of. ‘Minimalism’ is the underlying principle behind any such style. The focal point of any room, especially the living room should be the vacant space provided.

Bekal Fort of North Malabar in Kerala is a tourist spot worth seeing. Famed by the veteran Director Mani Ratnam through the sequence of a song in his film Bombay, the spot is a brilliant merge of eye-soothening colors of green, grey and blue. Built by Sivappa Naik of Ikkary dynasty between 1645 and 1660, the Bekal fort stands the challenge of time without even a tremor to the strength of the laterites. Kolathiri Rajas, the then rulers of North Malabar too are thought to be the builders of the fort by some historians. Its authority passed through the hands of Hyder Ali, and Tipu Sultan only to rest under the ghastly dominions of British East India Company. Adorned by the greenery of swaying coconut palms at one end, the monument stretches out into the turquoise blue sea studded with the glamour of fishing crafts. The Fort was built with great expertise and one wonders how they managed to, in an age when no technology backed man power. You need to spend quality time to explore the secret tunnels, a number of wells dug and the nooks and corners of the fort. The walls have several peep-holes where the soldiers on guard would have set the barrels of their rifles. As you walk along the path treaded by the soldiers of the age, a strange feeling of being lost in the past engulfs you, which lingers in you for days.

Biotechnology is now taken for granted in medicine, pharmaceuticals and agriculture. Food biotechnology has so far focused mainly on yield and nutrition rather than processing. In the near future, however, rapid advances in genetics, enzymology and contaminant detection are anticipated to change the way food is processed as well.
Unlike pharmaceuticals or medicine, where biotechnology can do things that were impossible till recently, food processors are ultimately limited by what consumers prefer to buy. The enormous volume and intense competition in the food industry has resulted from efficient, low-cost processing techniques that will virtually be impossible to change. Fermented foods are a natural target for designed processability, since organisms involved could be programmed to produce amino acids, vitamins, pigments, flavors, sweeteners and so on that are used in food processing.Though the public is generally quite receptive to food processing biotechnology, the processing of genetically altered microbes is not problem-free. There is an increased concern about the introduction of allergens, antigens or foreign genes into humans, but this should not be a problem where limited, specific changes are introduced into microbial genome. At any rate, the genetic changes introduced through bioengineering are meager compared to those induced through chemical mutagenesis, radiation or even traditional selective breeding. It is interesting that there has been no public outcry over the use of recombinant food processing enzymes.

The conflict between man and wildlife can be traced back to pre-historic times. Still, only recently did man’s encroachment into the wildlife became a major concern. The environmentalists around the globe were the first to sense the threat, who through unyielding efforts bridled the intrusion to some extend. Now the concern has changed its focus to encroachment of human habitation by wildlife. Stories of tuskers creating menace and leopards stealing children hit the columns almost daily. These were rather skimpy news that appeared in the inner pages of the news papers, until their frequency began to shoot up recently. As human became more and more omnipresent, the hungry leopards adapted to be more daring and wild due to hunger. Once it tastes human blood, it yearns for more human beings for its prey. Preying upon humans became easier as their natural prey show glimpses of extinction- another example of boomerang effect of man’s lack of foresight. The leopards too are placed into harm since the innocent ones too undergo restrictions enforced on man-eaters.The story is no different as far as tuskers are concerned. Thank God, they are herbivores. Still, the massive destruction to farmlands and orchards mostly become irreparable.
Mere pondering over the topic will bring no good. Only a knowledgeable and skilled management program can be an answer to the hitch.

    Ragging

Ragging to anyone is a synonym of violence, indignity and molestation. It is perhaps the most dreaded phase in life feared by each and every adolescent. The term has been so well popularized by instances of rapes and murders hitting the headlines. Despite the ban by The Supreme Court, its ripples can still be seen in many campuses. The authorities scuttle to wrap the complaints up, in a fear of tamper to the popularity of their institution. The vicious cycle goes on as the victims succumb to it in a hope to revenge upon their juniors. The perpetrators add on to the brutality year by year, placing themselves as metaphors of violence. It can be argued that milder forms of ragging necessarily speed up a student’s adaptation to a better disciplined atmosphere that most institutions provide. Whatever the argument be, ragging definitely exemplifies man’s innate urge to power upon deceased ones. This spread of this perilous habit from generations to generations has to be put to an end to. In this era of perishing EQ’s among adolescents, subjecting them to harsh phases of ragging further deteriorates their mental power and they easily succumb to depression. This worsens the condition and can be foreseen as a major threat our nation will have to face in future.
