The conflict between man and wildlife can be traced back to pre-historic times. Still, only recently did man’s encroachment into the wildlife became a major concern. The environmentalists around the globe were the first to sense the threat, who through unyielding efforts bridled the intrusion to some extend. Now the concern has changed its focus to encroachment of human habitation by wildlife. Stories of tuskers creating menace and leopards stealing children hit the columns almost daily. These were rather skimpy news that appeared in the inner pages of the news papers, until their frequency began to shoot up recently. As human became more and more omnipresent, the hungry leopards adapted to be more daring and wild due to hunger. Once it tastes human blood, it yearns for more human beings for its prey. Preying upon humans became easier as their natural prey show glimpses of extinction- another example of boomerang effect of man’s lack of foresight. The leopards too are placed into harm since the innocent ones too undergo restrictions enforced on man-eaters.The story is no different as far as tuskers are concerned. Thank God, they are herbivores. Still, the massive destruction to farmlands and orchards mostly become irreparable.
Mere pondering over the topic will bring no good. Only a knowledgeable and skilled management program can be an answer to the hitch.
